Three actors audition for the same career-defining lead role in a major British romcom, all from the discomfort of their own homes.
Synopsis:
‘SELF+TAPE’ follows three actors; Jess, Grace, and Isabelle, as they navigate the confusing, challenging and hilarious world of auditioning for a major British romcom feature film, “A Croissant For Three,” all via a self+tape, from the discomfort of their own homes.
Jess Holloway is an enthusiastic, happy-go-lucky twenty-something London girl looking for her big break. Despite the setbacks, very little will dampen her spirits. Usually. As the day goes on and she is let down by a housemate reading in for her (badly), as well as noisy neighbours, Jess must try and overcome these obstacles to deliver the performance needed to land the role. Will she be able to though?
Grace Thompson is a sarcastic, thirty-something northern lass from Wakefield, West Yorkshire. She keeps her cards close to her chest and pretends to not really care about the role, despite it being the biggest opportunity she’s ever had to date. Will her ice-cold persona melt as the audition progresses?
Isabelle Montague is a stylish, middle-aged, household name who shouldn’t really be doing self+tapes; but times change and she must go along with them. She does not care for any role she’s not been offered outright, nor the process, but by the end, will she have returned to her first true love - acting?
With only one camera angle per actor, we are offered unrestricted access to the authentic, self+tape process; bringing with it the tears, frustration and laughter that come with this increasingly popular form of casting. There may be three actors, but there is only one role.

Director’s Statement:
'SELF+TAPE' was a project born out of numerous discussions I've had over the years with actors, about the ever-evolving auditions process. Whilst self-taping is not new, the increasing pressures to produce compelling, high-quality tapes to secure work; often at short notice, led me to dive deeper into this unique hiring process. The discussions around interruptions, housemates or family members (non-actors) reading off-lines (often poorly), as well as lighting, sound and performance choice issues, culminated in the inspiration for this short, fictitious screenplay.
From a creative perspective, colour theory and composition were integral to this project. By restricting the entire setup per actor to one camera position each, it allows for the performance to flow in a way that would naturally occur when an actor produces their own self tape. The creative license I implemented, was to avoid the traditional, cheap backdrops, poor lighting and echoey sound; and opt for a heightened reality of softer living room and office backgrounds, and higher production values, with shared colours of gold, purple, green and of course, red hair. This allows for a more seamless transition between the quick cutting between performances, in a bid to reduce strain on the viewer's eyes.
Whilst self-taping has its place and is here to stay, it is my hope that this film highlights the various challenges facing actors globally, and in a very real way. It will hopefully create a discourse into minimising, rather than continuing to add pressures on the casting process, and allow room for traditional in-person casting sessions to resume their original function wherever possible, and most importantly, allow actors to thrive.
